A toilet would not stop running inside a modern one-bedroom apartment on Edinburgh Avenue in Canberra’s NewActon precinct.
The constant sound of moving water was hard to ignore in the compact home. Water was also being wasted because the cistern did not stop filling as it should.
Our plumber opened the cistern, inspected the internal parts and completed the required repair.
A Toilet That Would Not Shut Off
After a toilet is flushed, the cistern should refill and then stop.
At this Edinburgh Avenue apartment, water kept running after the cistern had filled.
This caused ongoing noise and wasted water. In a one-bedroom apartment, even a small plumbing fault can quickly affect the comfort of the whole home.
The problem needed attention before more water was lost.
Inspecting the Parts Inside the Cistern
Our plumber removed the cistern lid and inspected the internal parts.
These parts control:
- how water enters the cistern
- how the toilet flushes
- when the water flow stops

Completing the Toilet Repair
Once the problem inside the cistern had been identified, our plumber completed the required repair.
The work restored control of the water flow so the cistern could stop filling once it reached the correct level.
The toilet was then checked to make sure it could fill, flush and shut off normally.
Stopping the Ongoing Water Waste
Our final checks confirmed that:
- the toilet no longer ran constantly
- the cistern stopped filling at the correct level
- the toilet could flush normally
- the ongoing noise had stopped
- water was no longer being wasted through the fault
The resident could use the toilet without hearing water run long after each flush.
If the problem had been left, the toilet could have continued wasting water around the clock. Over time, this may have led to a much higher water bill and placed more wear on the cistern parts.
